Draper, Andy and his friends talk about their plans for the night after their basketball game that they just played and won and so they went to making plans to drink beers and hang out and go to a party. Later that night, the car they're driving crashes. Andy and B.J. and Tyrone somehow were able to get out of the car but Rob couldn’t make it out of the car and later on died from an explosion. Andy's license gets suspended and has to take Alcohol Rehabilitation classes. However, Andy seems to be getting over the death of Rob. The only person Andy tells his true feelings to is Keisha and thats at school. Even sometimes at school he takes himself out of things and doesn't participate in class activities. Towards the end of the year close to the Talent Show.. Keisha gets really fed up with how Andy’s acting and its been going on for awhile and so she breaks up with him. The next couple days Andy doesn't come to school. However, in the mean time Rhonda goes to his house after school to give Andy homework of the missing days but when she shows up, Andy’s mother and brother Monty were walking up around the same time.. Monty sees blood on the ceiling in the house, so it left him wondering and that caused his mother to go upstairs to Andy's room to walk in and to see that he has committed suicide. Andy is dealing with depression and guilt. His friends really tried to help him and specially his girlfriend. I feel like Andy falls in victim to the no one understands me or real men don't show vulnerability mind set and which is a lie because everyone shows vulnerability, and it just so happen to be Andy’s bad struggle. The message has a strong meaning to it don't drink and drive, don't be afraid to look vulnerable and get help. I liked that the novel opened my eyes about friendships and why you should stay close to people. You never know if something like this could happen in your life. I would recommend this book to sports players and everyone, and to those who think it's okay to drink and drive, so they can really understand the reality of what could happen to them or someone they care about, within’ seconds. It wasn't my favorite novel that I've read although I see the value of reading it and the understanding of the book. ...more Sharon M. The book is written from Andy’s perspective, but it also shares the letters written between other characters of the book. It also includes newspaper clippings and homework assignments from the students. It does not jump around from character to character, but it does include the other characters’ thoughts. Tears of a Tiger was a quick read. It was simply written and contained a lot of dialogue. The dialect of this book made it hard to follow at times. It was written from the point of view of an African American teenager who is perceived as a bad kid who talked using mostly slang. Trying to determine what each slang word meant made it a kind of annoying book to read. I would recommend this book to young adults who know how control their feelings because the context of this story can teach you valuable lessons. I would not recommend reading this book when you are around other people because it may cause you to cry. This book is not for individuals who prefer challenging books with a strong vocabulary. Overall, I think this book was decent read. ...more This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. These characters were ones who brought different takes/view on an incident that precipitated an abundant amount of emotions. Keisha, Tyrone, BJ, Gerald, Rhonda, Monty, and a psychiatrist are all examples of the characters that encouraged Andy (the main character) to try to forget/break away from an accident. This accident involved four high school boys who were drinking and driving the night after a basketball game. All of the characters who were involved or heard about the accident were devastated, however they all knew what had happened and how of each of the boys were feeling. The close friends were there for Andy (the one who driving) and tried to have his back after they knew how he was feeling. Although Andy was upset, he did not open up his feelings to just anyone. He discussed how he was feeling with a psychiatrist who was scheduled to help him lose his depression/guilt and his girlfriend Keisha who forced herself to help him even though she had wished he could just forget about it. This story takes place in Cincinnati, Ohio a popular city which is home of the Cincinnati Reds. The characters in the book attend Hazelwood High School where most participate in the schools basketball team and for some of them its their main priority. Throughout the book there are many shocking or “jaw dropping” events that really make you think or question the choices the characters make. One of the most crucial events was the death of Rob Washington. His death was caused by the drinking and driving accident on a highway which involved a huge fire in the car. The three other boys survived this accident including the driver (Andy) who was mentioned. This accident was followed by many other events that were all over powered/caused by the amount of guilt Andy had taken to himself. Another plot event was Andy meeting with psychiatrist to overcome his negative feelings from the accident and the blame he had put on himself. Having scheduled appointments with the psychiatrist began to help him feel like it was okay to talk about what had happened. The ending of the book really took part in what the author was trying to tell us, and that was the suicide Andy committed. Andy had been too stressed out and could no longer go through the pain he had been feeling. Andy had been breaking away from his friends and started to close off again. This had happened because Keisha and Andy had stopped talking and the psychiatrist wasn’t available at the time Andy needed him most. As you can see the guilt was a huge factor that was included throughout the book. Andy had never been so depressed once he realized he had killed his best friend. All of this was pouring on Andy’s emotions and making it worse. The solution to his problems were taking part in school activities, writing a letter to the parents of Rob Washington, and talking to the psychiatrist. These three things had forced him to let all of his feelings and thoughts out instead of trapping them inside. Unfortunately these things had only helped Andy for a short period of time. I enjoyed this book for many different reasons but the one thing that stood out to me was coming face to face with perspectives and opinions from other characters. The author had introduced these perspectives and opinions by including phones calls, English assignments, letters, and conversations. For example the English assignment that Keisha had written had mentioned that she thought Andy was hiding something and he needs to forget about it. Keisha’s opinion was that Andy should not have been that upset about this anymore. One thing I disliked about the book was that the author did not include Monty (Andy’s brother) in some parts of the book. To me, Monty had seemed really important to Andy and I feel like Monty could have driven Andy to have a smile on his face again. I recommend this book because it includes important themes/lessons and that you can use clues to predict an event that may happen. I recommend this book to any reader who is ready for unexpected twists and plot events and one who is always thinking of the cause and effect for these events. When reading this book it is important to really analyze what is going on and use the characters and clues to see why something had just taken place. “Tears of a Tiger” is one book that helped me discover that one event can change someones life and that follow up actions can occur. ...more','url':'http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/119838.Tears_of_a_Tiger','og_descr':'After a car accident kills Robert, Andy's best friend and teammate on the Hazelwood High Tigers, Andy doesn't know if he can go on.
